My Nonfiction
I love writing nonfiction because I'm interested in so many different things: from dogs to math, from science to music. When I write nonfiction, I get to learn something new, or share fun information with my readers, or both! Here are some articles and stories I've had published and where you can find them.
Click 'n' TreatEver wonder how animal trainers teach dolphins to leap out of the water
or seals to open refrigerators? Clickers! That's how I taught my dog to kiss me on the cheek. This article tells how clicker training works and how to do it with your animal. (My dog Thibodeaux got his picture in a magazine for the first time!) Bonus: A train-the-"puppy" game lets you try clicker training with your family or friends. Odyssey, January 2005 |
Musical DetectivesScholars use clues such as letters, handwriting, and types of paper to figure out
what music Mozart composed and when. Calliope magazine, April 2003 Also in that issue on Mozart: A City of Greats Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven all lived in Vienna, the music capital of the world. The Little Book Before a composer can write an opera, someone else must write the words. |
Statistics Never Lie . . .. . . but they sure can be misleading!
This fun quiz helps you think about details, ask questions, and be skeptical so you can avoid being misled. Odyssey magazine, December 2003 Random or Not? Find Out With a ScatterplotShannon's science project asks, "Do students who watch more TV get lower grades?"
A graph called a scatterplot helps her decide if there's a link. This article explains when and how to use a scatterplot for your science experiment. Odyssey magazine, December 2003 |

Look Out, Spider-Man! Here Comes Gecko-Girl!Dr. Kellar Autumn watched a gecko walk across the ceiling.
"How do they stick?" he wondered. His Gecko Team's experiments found the amazing answer to that question -- an answer that one day might produce gecko adhesive tape and gecko robots. Cricket magazine, November 2006 |
My Fiction
Sometimes stories arrive in my head fully formed, demanding to be written down. When they're published, it's fun to see how the illustrator chose to picture my characters.
